Weight Loss Weekly

"Zen is not some kind of excitement, but concentration on our regular routine"
Shunryu Suzuki

This week was definitely harder, and it's got me wondering if every day exercise is too much?

Weight Loss Weekly is a collaborative blogging endeavour. Sunny, Joie and I get together to talk goals, with exercise being the theme for now. This week Sunny is off to celebrate her 5th wedding anniversary and is having a week away from WLW. Congratulations Sunny enjoy your break. you can catch Sunny's adventures over at That Extra 20 Pounds.

Be sure to catch up with Joie and find out how her week of walking went. "Hooray! I hit a breakthrough this week!" read more at Joie de vivre: an amateur gourmet's guide

I did manage to exercise each day, but it was a struggle, I needed a great deal of persuasion to get up and get going and what constituted as exercise became a bit less intentional, a gentle wander with the dogs, sprinting for the train. I spose these things fit into the something is better than nothing category.

I'm hoping the next week will have a bit more structure. The flight to London was tiring, I think I'm still running on pure excitement and as a result the definition of exercise has become even more vague. Today we have a walk in the countryside planned, which I'm really looking forward to, I'm hoping it will restore my exercise ambition and that I'll be able to prove to myself that I can keep on with my basic habits no matter where I am and what I'm doing.

So to plan to plan or not to plan this is the next question. I guess I will go as far as to plan my push up days, which will be Monday, Wednesday and Friday, but the rest is left up to chance for now, much like this whole trip.

As far as the exercise everyday goal goes, I am pressing on in an effort to make my day to day life more active and inspired, to get me feeling more able to leap out into the world and move forward. I'm feeling like this trip is a great opportunity for me to demonstrate to myself that I can do this, anytime, anywhere.

I'm curious, are you able to stick to an exercise plan when your routine is totally changed? Any tips on keeping on keeping on with it all when on holiday?

  1. I have a hard time keeping up with my routine on vacation. However, isn't that what vacation is all about? A break from the routine? Even though I don't keep up with my routine though, I always seem to exercise more (there is more walking), drink more water, and somehow am more aware of what I eat since vacation is all about eating out. I tend to split meals with my hubby or just mentally map out my plate and eat half or less (since I know an equally big meal will be coming in a few hours). If you don't keep up with your goals though, that's okay! Forgive yourself and realize you're not on vacation your whole life and that yes, you will get back to your routine when you get back home. Have a great time!

  2. I like the whole "structured non-plan" way. When I'm on vacation I like to be aware of how much activity I'm getting in; usually I'm not "working out" in the sense of lifting weights or going to the gym, but I'm getting in the LIFESTYLE ACTIVITY- and I think that in reality, that's the only kind of exercise we really need.

Love that you're taking advantage of the opportunity this trip provides to try out a new way of doing things. Good luck and have fun!

  4. No, I have failed miserably in the past when it comes to that. It's an area in which I still have to do a lot of work. Good luck with the new week. And I love that quote!

  7. I agree with Sagan about lifestyle activity - our bodies really like to be constantly on the go rather than a burst on a machine for 30 minutes. Usually I find that holidays provide a lot more opportunity to be active, especially in Europe when we walk for hours each day, exploring instead of catching public transport. And daily exercise is hard at first, but I've found it's the best way to create a habit. Enjoy your trip :-)

  8. It's hard to stick to a plan when there's a chnage in routine.
But so far I did manage to walk 15-20 minutes after walking my son at school. Then i do some stretches at home and some sit ups if I feel like it. It feels good, espcailly when the weather is sunny and nice now.
And I still managed to keep the 4 lbs. I lost off (and still eating some cake and ice cream 1-3 times a week).
But mainly what i love about those easy walks is it's about my body feeling better, less tense, and it helps me clear my head too.
